The College of Arts + Sciences is providing research data storage space for Principal Investigators (PIs) to use within their lab, primarily as an alternative to local NAS units. To provide this space the College has partnered with UITS Research Technologies to leverage their Geode-Project service on the Geode storage system. UITS will provide the service, and the College will administer space requests from PIs and provide consulting on usage via the College Storage Architect (CSA).
Geode is a large disk-based data storage system operated by the UITS Research Storage team. It provides the home directories mounted on IU’s research supercomputers and “Geode-Project” space allocations to research projects. Geode-Project spaces are fee-based and require an arranged Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UITS and the unit requesting storage space. The College of Arts + Sciences has signed an MOU with UITS which permits the College to distribute Geode-Project storage space to research projects within its units. The individual research projects do not need to establish their own MOUs, which makes space allocations quick and simple. Billing of individual research projects is done by the College, and the College then pays UITS the space consumed by all its research projects.
