IT Checkup Tips
- Make sure your operating system is fully patched. Being setup for automatic updates is the standard for home machines.
- Make sure your antivirus and anti-malware software is set to automatically get any updates (new patterns).
- You should be running on a supported operating system. For example Windows XP, Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.13 and below are no longer supported (no new updates are available).
- Your email should be set up so all of your sent email has a digital (S/MIME) signature. This should be setup on all (laptop, phone, desktop) of your devices you use to send email.
- Beware of phishing attacks. A little paranoia is good.
- Any important data or document should be stored on networked storage solutions such as IU MS storage, IU Google storage or a departmental file server that is rated for the highest classification of the data. You can save files locally when you are without network access.
- Utilize IU VPN via Pulse Secure regularly when accessing on-campus network resources as well as to ensure your IU issued MS Office applications and operating system remains fully licensed.
- Leverage Windows Remote Desktop to make remote connections to your primary on-campus computer for that working-in-office feel.
- Sign in to Skype for Business with a headset to utilize your campus phone number to make and receive calls.
- Make sure your device is encrypted.
- Don’t use unknown or untrusted devices to connect to IU resources such as a friend’s laptop or internet café when traveling, only utilize IU issued and/or IU IT Pro managed devices.
- Limit concurrent use of other in-home network devices and streaming media services to free up network bandwidth for more stable network connections. Where possible utilize wired over wireless connections.
